What do you know about Belarus? Its past appears to boil down to being one of the former Polish provinces while contemporary Belarus is overshadowed with a difficult political situation. This journey diary records the ten-day stay stay in the Hrodna Voblast, where I was accompanied by researchers and historians involved in the ‘Virtual Shtetl’ project. During our stay there, we visited twenty-eight former Jewish towns, forty Jewish cemeteries, thirty synagogues and twelve schools.

Belarus has always seemed exotic. I knew little about this country, I had never been behind the Polish eastern borders before crossing this one.

Now, I bless those Russian classes that I used to hate so much because without them I would not have be able to read the Cyrillic script or understand what the Belarusians say in Russian.
